Awards

At the National Outdoor Recreation Conference (NORC), SORP recognizes and honors individuals and groups for their outstanding accomplishments in the field of outdoor recreation planning, management, research, and policy, as well as in service to SORP. Statewide recreation plans (such as SCORP Plans) are now recognized under the Project Excellence category. An organization (office) is limited to one nomination.   Starting in 2024, these awards will be recognized biennially in conjunction with the National Outdoor Recreation Conference. 

Award Categories

National Recreation Resource Leadership Award

The recipient of this award is chosen by the SORP Board of Directors to acknowledge an individual or organization whose career path has had a significant national impact on outdoor recreation and the outdoor recreation profession.

Individual Service Award

The Individual Service Award honors an individual who has made contributions to the outdoor recreation profession. The award may recognize one specific contribution or a series of contributions. 

Awards honor nominees who are: ·     

  • Employed as an outdoor recreation professional.
  • Have made outstanding contributions to the profession, interpreted broadly to include: teaching, training, planning, management, research, policy development, administration, budgeting and finance, legal analysis, writing, publishing, leadership, problem-solving, innovation, or creativity. 

Each individual service award nomination will be evaluated based on its advancement of SORP’s six values.

    The Individual Service Award is presented annually to up to three recipients who have made significant and lasting contributions to the outdoor recreation profession. The award may recognize one specific contribution or a series of contributions over one’s career.

Project Excellence Award

The Project Excellence Award honors an exemplary outdoor recreation project, plan, or program. This award recognizes innovative and solution-oriented practices, built projects, recreation programs, and services that strive to enhance outdoor recreation benefits for communities. The scale may be local, regional, state or national. Examples of honors may include trail plans, statewide outdoor recreation plans, new programs and initiatives, strategic communication and outreach, site design or master planning, and cutting edge research and studies. The award is presented to the collaborating agencies and organizations key to the success of the effort. Awards honor projects that involve:

  • Unique or special circumstances (including breadth of the planning area)
  • Problem-solving 
  • High levels of innovation and creativity
  • Collaboration (stakeholder engagement, community outreach, joint planning) 

Each project excellence award nomination will be evaluated based on its advancement of SORP’s six values.
