Pathways to Inclusive and Accessible Outdoors in North Carolina - Presentation

06-03-2024 08:14 AM

Outdoor recreation positively impacts physical health, mental well-being, environmental consciousness, community building, and economic prosperity. Despite these amazing advantages, millions of individuals with disabilities face obstacles in accessing outdoor spaces.

This presentation is all about finding solutions to enhance infrastructure, improve communications, and prioritize accessibility in outdoor environments. The presentation will provide examples of how Destination Marketing Organizations (DMOs) are providing comprehensive information about the accessibility of outdoor spaces and trails that has been specially designed for people with disabilities. Knowledge is power, and the more we can empower people with disabilities to make their own decisions, the greater their autonomy and ability to INDEPENDENTLY enjoy the outdoors.

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify challenges faced by people with disabilities in outdoor spaces;
  2. Understand pathways for inclusion in the outdoor recreation;
  3. Improve their communications about accessible outdoor recreation opportunities.
